The Nespresso Vertuo Next is Nespresso’s smallest and most connected Vertuo machine. It’s the entry point to the Vertuo system if you want five cup sizes from one machine and don’t want to pay for the larger VertuoPlus. The Bluetooth in the name confuses a lot of buyers, so let’s be clear about what it actually does, how the coffee compares, and where this machine tends to fail.
What the Vertuo Next actually is
The Next brews only with Nespresso Vertuo capsules – the dome-shaped ones with a barcode around the rim. It does not take OriginalLine capsules, ground coffee, or third-party Vertuo-compatible pods from other brands unless they are licensed Vertuo barcodes. If you already own an Original machine, the capsules are not interchangeable.
Like all Vertuo machines, it uses Centrifusion: the capsule spins at up to 7,000 RPM while water is injected, and the barcode tells the machine how much water, what temperature, and how fast to spin for that specific blend. That system gives you five sizes without any settings to change:
Espresso (40ml), Double Espresso (80ml), Gran Lungo (150ml), Mug (230ml), and Alto (414ml). You press one button. The machine reads the barcode and brews. There is no manual volume override beyond programming your own long-press preference, and no temperature control.
The Next is narrower and shorter than the VertuoPlus, with a 1.1L water tank on the back and a 10-capsule used-capsule container. It heats in about 30 seconds and auto-ejects the capsule when you open the head.
What Bluetooth does – and doesn’t do

Bluetooth is not for brewing from your phone. You cannot start a coffee, change volume, or adjust temperature in an app. The Next’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connect the machine to the Nespresso app for three things:
1. Firmware updates. Nespresso occasionally tweaks barcode recipes and brewing parameters. The machine updates quietly in the background when connected.
2. Machine status. Descaling alerts, capsule stock warnings if you order through Nespresso, and troubleshooting.
3. Initial pairing and machine registration for warranty.
In practice, most owners pair it once, update it, and never open the app again. If you never connect it, the machine still brews perfectly. It will still read barcodes and make all five sizes. You just won’t get firmware updates and you’ll rely on the two front lights (steady, blinking, orange/red) for descaling and error codes instead of a phone notification.
If you want phone-controlled brewing or recipe saving, this is not the system for you. Look at connected OriginalLine machines or a bean-to-cup automatic instead.
How the coffee tastes
Vertuo coffee is not espresso in the traditional sense. Because of the centrifugal extraction, every cup has a thick, foamy crema – even the Alto mug size. It’s aerated and spoonable, not the tight, oily crema from a 9-bar pump. Some people love the mouthfeel; others find it foamy and bitter as it settles.
For milk drinks, the 40ml and 80ml capsules work best. They are more concentrated and cut through milk. The larger Mug and Alto capsules are brewed as longer, filter-style coffees. They are closer to a strong drip coffee than an Americano. If you mostly drink 300ml+ milky lattes, you will need to brew two double espressos or use a separate milk frother like the Aeroccino – the Next has no built-in frother.
Capsule choice matters more than the machine. Stormio, Odacio, and Melozio are balanced for mugs; Diavolitto and Altissio are better for short, intense shots. The Vertuo line has over 30 permanent blends, but you are locked into Nespresso’s pricing and recycling system. There is no way to use cheaper ground coffee to save money. When capsules cost $0.85-$1.25 each, that adds up fast if you drink 3-4 mugs a day.
Vertuo Next vs. other Vertuo machines
The brewing inside is identical. A Vertuo Next, VertuoPlus, and Vertuo Pop all read the same barcode and spin the same way, so a Melozio mug tastes the same from any of them. You are paying for size, tank capacity, and convenience features.
| Machine | Footprint & Tank | Key Difference | Who It Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertuo Next | 14cm wide, 1.1L tank (rear), 4kg | Smallest Vertuo, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, 5 sizes | Small kitchens, single or two-person households |
| VertuoPlus / VertuoPlus Deluxe | 23cm wide, 1.8L tank (movable), 4.6kg | Motorized head, larger tank, more stable | Families or heavy mug drinkers who hate refilling |
| Vertuo Pop | 14cm wide, 0.56L tank, 3.5kg | Cheapest Vertuo, very compact, 4 sizes (no Alto) | Students, offices, second machine; fine if you don’t need Alto |
If counter space is tight, the Next makes sense. If you brew 3-4 Altos back-to-back, the VertuoPlus’s bigger tank and heavier base feel less fussy – the Next can wobble a bit when you open the aluminum head one-handed. The Pop is even smaller and cheaper, but that tiny tank needs filling daily.
Reliability and common failure modes
The Next had a rough launch in 2020 with reports of leaks, noisy brewing, and units that stopped reading barcodes. Nespresso revised the internals since then (look for machines made late 2021 or later), but a few issues still come up more often on the Next than on the VertuoPlus:
1. Leaking from the head. The hinged head has a rubber seal that needs to stay clean. Old coffee grounds on the seal or a dented capsule rim causes water to dribble down the front. Wipe the seal weekly and never force a capsule in.
2. Barcode read errors. If the barcode reader window inside the head is dirty or fogged, the machine blinks orange and refuses to brew. A damp cotton swab on the small glass window fixes most cases. Storing capsules in a humid place can also smudge barcodes.
3. Descaling lockout. Vertuo machines are strict about descaling. If you ignore the orange half-light, the machine will eventually block brewing until you run the descaling cycle with Nespresso descaling solution. Use filtered water if your tap is hard; it doubles the time between descales.
4. Centrifusion noise and vibration. All Vertuos are louder than OriginalLine. The Next on a light table can rattle. Put it on a mat or against a backsplash.
Nespresso’s warranty is typically two years and they are good about replacing faulty brewers if you call support, but you will be without a machine for a few days. Keep the box for the first month.
Who should buy it – and who shouldn’t
Buy the Vertuo Next if you want the simplest way to get espresso-style shots and big mugs from one button, you have limited counter space, and you are comfortable buying capsules only from Nespresso. It’s genuinely convenient for busy mornings and for households where one person wants an espresso and another wants a 400ml mug.
Stick with the cheaper option if you are on a tight budget and don’t need the Alto size – the Vertuo Pop brews the same quality for less, and the money you save covers a lot of capsules. If you mostly drink flat whites and cappuccinos, skip Vertuo entirely and consider an OriginalLine machine with a frother or a small semi-automatic like the Bambino range. You will get better control over shot strength and lower capsule costs.
Do not buy any Vertuo if you want to experiment with third-party coffee, single-origin beans, or dialing in grind size. The barcode system is closed. That’s the trade-off for convenience: you get consistency, but you give up choice. If you want a machine that can grow with your taste, a grinder + espresso machine gives you far more headroom, though it takes more work.
For most buyers, the practical upgrade path is not a more expensive Vertuo – it’s adding a good milk frother and a capsule drawer. A separate milk frother for Nespresso makes the Next far more versatile for lattes without taking up much more space.
FAQ
Do I need Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to use the Vertuo Next?
No. It brews normally without ever pairing. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is only for firmware updates, descaling reminders, and registration in the Nespresso app. If you skip the app, you still get all five cup sizes.
Can I use refillable pods or Original capsules in the Vertuo Next?
No. The Next only works with Vertuo capsules that have a barcode. Original capsules are a different shape and system, and refillable Vertuo caps without a valid barcode will not brew or will error out. Licensed Vertuo capsules from Starbucks and a few partners do work because they have Nespresso barcodes.
How often does it need descaling?
About every 3-6 months depending on water hardness and use. The machine shows a half-orange light when it’s time. Run the full descaling cycle as described in the manual; a quick rinse will not clear it and the machine may lock brewing until the cycle is completed.
Is the Vertuo Next noisy?
Louder than a typical drip machine or OriginalLine Nespresso. The spinning extraction lasts 30-70 seconds depending on cup size and is most noticeable on Alto. It’s normal, but placing the machine on a stable counter helps reduce vibration.
