For espresso, this is your dose in grams — yield = dose × 2.

Ratio used:1:16
Coffee:31 g
Water:500 g

Tip: dial in grind & taste — sour = under-extracted (grind finer / brew longer), bitter = over-extracted (grind coarser / brew shorter).

How to use this coffee ratio calculator

Select your brew method and the tool loads its recommended coffee-to-water ratio by weight. Enter the amount of water you’re brewing with and it instantly returns the grams of coffee to grind. For espresso, the input switches to your dose (the dry grounds in the basket) and the calculator returns the target yield in the cup at a classic 1:2 brew ratio. Weigh everything with a kitchen scale for repeatable results — volume scoops are wildly inaccurate.

Why coffee-to-water ratio matters

Ratio is the single biggest lever on strength and extraction. A tighter ratio like 1:15 gives a bolder, heavier cup; a looser 1:17 brews lighter and more tea-like. Espresso sits far tighter (1:2) because it’s a concentrated shot, while cold brew uses a strong 1:8 concentrate you later dilute. Start from the default for your method, then adjust by a point or two to taste. If the cup is sour, it’s under-extracted — grind finer or brew longer. If it’s bitter, it’s over-extracted — grind coarser or shorten the brew.
