What the Lattissima One Black Is (and Isn’t)

The Nespresso Lattissima One in Ebony Black is De’Longhi’s single-serve entry in the Lattissima line. It uses Nespresso Original capsules and has a built-in milk system that makes one milk drink at a time, then asks you to clean itself. That “One” in the name is literal. It is designed for one latte or cappuccino per cycle, not back-to-back milk drinks for a crowd.

Inside, it’s a standard 19-bar Nespresso Original thermoblock machine with a 1-liter water tank, a used capsule container for 10 capsules, and a 0.33L removable milk jug with a single-serve frothing system. You get three direct buttons: Espresso (40ml), Lungo (110ml), and Milk (with milk). The milk button brews espresso directly into frothed milk in the cup. There is no separate hot milk or milk froth-only button like on the Gran Lattissima.

The Black finish is matte plastic with gloss accents. It shows fewer water spots than the white version, but shows dust and dried milk splatter more. Dimensions are compact at about 15.4 x 10.2 x 10.2 inches, which matters if you are trying to fit it between a toaster and a wall.

What Daily Use Is Actually Like

Operation is simple: fill water, fill milk to the single-drink line, pop in a capsule, put your cup under the spout, press Milk. The machine froths the milk first, then brews the capsule through it. Total time from cold start is about 40-50 seconds, about 25 seconds if already heated.

The milk portion is fixed. You get roughly 100-120ml of frothed milk depending on the milk type, then a 40ml espresso shot. You cannot adjust milk volume on this model. If you want a stronger drink, you can press Espresso after the milk cycle finishes, but you will be brewing a second capsule.

The Lattissima One heats milk via steam drawn through the jug. Whole milk froths best and gives the most stable foam. Oat and skim milk froth, but produce thinner, larger bubbles that collapse faster. Barista-edition oat milks hold up better, but none will give you true microfoam for latte art. This is airy cappuccino-style foam, not silky steamed milk.

Noise is typical Nespresso: loud capsule piercing and pump buzz for 15 seconds, plus a hiss as the milk froths. Not quiet-office friendly.

The One-Drink Milk System: Convenience vs. Limitation

This is the core trade-off of the Lattissima One. De’Longhi designed a milk jug that you fill only to the “one portion” mark and that empties completely each time. After every milk drink, the machine flashes the clean alert and you are supposed to run the cleaning cycle.

Cleaning means filling the jug with water to the clean line and pressing the clean button. It flushes steam through the milk spout for about 15 seconds into your cup. If you skip it, milk residue bakes inside the spout and clogs. That is the number one failure mode on all Lattissima machines – a blocked milk frother because the rinse was skipped a few times.

Compared to a standalone Aeroccino or a manual steam wand, the Lattissima One is far more convenient for one person who wants one latte in the morning without thinking. It is annoying for two people who both want lattes. You have to fill, brew, clean, refill, brew, clean again. A Nespresso Gran Lattissima or Creatista does back-to-back milk drinks without that refill-clean-refill loop.

The jug itself must be refrigerated if it contains milk. Because it only holds one serving, you are not storing much, but you do need to remember to put the jug back in the fridge after. Leave milk in it on the counter and it will spoil quickly, and the rubber suction tube will keep the odor.

Capsule Coffee Quality and Cost

As an OriginalLine machine, it brews the same as any other Original Nespresso: pressurized extraction, thick crema, consistent but not specialty-coffee complexity. Espresso is hot, around 145-155°F in the cup after milk mixing, which is drinkable immediately but not scalding.

You are locked into Nespresso Original capsules and compatible third-party capsules. Original capsules run $0.70-$0.85 each, third-party as low as $0.30. If you drink two milk drinks a day, expect $40-$50 per month in capsules alone. The machine is cheap to buy, expensive to feed. That is true for all Nespresso machines, but worth calculating before you buy.

Capsule recognition is mechanical, not barcode-based like Vertuo. You can use any Original size capsule; the machine does not know the difference. It will always brew the volume tied to the button you pressed. If you put a dark roast Arpeggio pod and press Lungo, you will get a watery, bitter 110ml pull. Stick to the button the capsule was blended for.

How It Compares in the Lattissima Range

Choosing between Lattissima models comes down to how many milk drinks you make at once and how much control you want.

Model Milk Drinks Per Fill Milk Controls Water Tank Best For
Lattissima One 1 One-touch milk + espresso, no adjustments 1.0 L Solo drinker, tight counter, lowest price
Gran Lattissima 3-4 9 recipes, separate milk froth, milk + espresso options 1.3 L Couples, entertaining, more drink variety
Lattissima Touch 3-4 6 recipes, one-touch, touch interface 0.9 L Similar to Gran but slightly older design
Creatista Uno (by Breville) Unlimited (steam wand) Manual steam wand, adjustable temp and texture 1.5 L Learners who want real steaming control

If you look at the wider OriginalLine range, a basic Essenza Mini or Pixie paired with a separate Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother is often cheaper and more flexible than the Lattissima One. You can froth any amount of milk and you can heat milk without brewing coffee. The trade-off is two appliances and one more step in the morning.

Do not confuse this with the Vertuo Lattissima. Vertuo uses larger, dome-shaped Vertuo capsules and centrifusion brewing. Vertuo gives you bigger coffees (up to 414ml) but capsule choice is more limited and third-party options are scarce. OriginalLine is better if you live on espresso and small milk drinks.

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Buy the Lattissima One Black

Buy it if you are one person or a household where only one person drinks lattes, you want absolute push-button simplicity, and you have limited counter space. It is also a good fit for a home office or guest room where you want to offer a latte without teaching anyone how to steam milk.

Skip it if you regularly make two or more milk drinks back-to-back, if you want flat whites or precise latte art, or if you like to control milk temperature and texture. The fixed portion and mandatory rinse between drinks will frustrate you. In that case, the Gran Lattissima or a small semi-automatic with a steam wand will serve you better, even though they cost more upfront.

Also skip it if you are sensitive to ongoing capsule costs. A small automatic bean-to-cup machine costs more initially but runs on whole beans at $0.15-$0.20 per drink. Over a year, that difference pays for the machine if you drink a lot of coffee.

Reliability and Maintenance to Expect

The Lattissima One is generally reliable for 3-5 years of daily use if you descale and rinse the milk circuit. Two common failure points:

1. Clogged milk frother. Milk protein builds up in the transparent suction tube and the spout connector. If foam output drops or the machine sputters, remove the milk jug, take the frother apart (it clicks apart into 5 pieces), soak in hot soapy water, and clear the small air intake hole with a pin. Do this weekly if you use it daily.

2. Descaling neglect. Nespresso will flash the descaling alert after about 300 capsules or if water hardness is high. If you ignore it, the thermoblock scales and heat time gets longer, then flow drops. Descaling takes about 20 minutes with Nespresso descaler solution. Using filtered water slows scale but does not prevent it.

The drip tray is small and the capsule container fills quickly. Empty both every 2-3 days or you will get overflow onto the counter. The used capsules stay wet, so empty them before they start to smell.

Warranty is 1 year through De’Longhi/Nespresso. Nespresso’s support is usually good about replacing faulty milk jugs and frothers under warranty, less good about pump issues after year one.

Buying Advice

Price fluctuates a lot. At full MSRP around $329, it is hard to recommend over a Gran Lattissima on sale for $380. At $229-$269, which it hits often during sales events, it makes sense as a budget milk machine. Check if the bundle includes a milk jug – some refurbished listings do not.

If you are buying new, look for bundles that include a capsule sampler and descaling kit. If you are buying used, test the milk froth. Ask the seller to brew a milk drink; weak or watery foam usually means the frother is already clogged or the steam valve is weak.

For someone who wants Nespresso convenience but does not care about milk, a cheaper OriginalLine machine without a built-in frother will make identical espresso for about half the price. Be honest about whether you will actually use the milk function daily. Many buyers use it the first month, then switch to black coffee and wish they had saved the money and counter space.

If you do want the one-touch milk experience and the compact size, the Nespresso Lattissima One in black is the smallest, simplest way to get it. Just know you are trading flexibility for that simplicity.

FAQ

Can I make just frothed milk without coffee on the Lattissima One?

No. The Lattissima One has no standalone milk froth button. Pressing the milk button always brews a capsule after frothing. If you want hot frothed milk only, you need a Gran Lattissima, Creatista, or a separate Aeroccino.

Can I use oat, almond, or soy milk?

Yes, but foam quality varies. Barista-blend oat milk froths closest to dairy. Almond and soy tend to make larger, less stable bubbles and can leave more residue in the tube. Whatever milk you use, rinse the milk circuit immediately after each drink.

Does the Lattissima One use Vertuo or Original capsules?

Original only. It takes the small aluminum OriginalLine capsules. Vertuo capsules are larger and bell-shaped and will not fit. The good news is Original has far more third-party compatible options and lower per-capsule costs.

How often do I need to descale it?

When the descaling light comes on, typically every 300 capsules or every 3-4 months with normal use and moderately hard water. With hard tap water, it can be every 2 months. Using filtered water and descaling on time keeps the thermoblock from clogging and extends pump life.
