Original vs. Vertuo: The Only Decision That Really Matters
Nespresso sells two incompatible capsule systems, and you have to pick one before you look at any specific machine. They do not cross over. Original capsules are small, pressure-brewed like real espresso, and made by dozens of brands. Vertuo capsules are larger, dome-shaped, brewed with centrifusion (spinning the capsule at high speed), and barcode-read by the machine to set brew size. Vertuo makes both espresso and full 7-12 oz coffee. Original only makes espresso and lungo.
Buy Original if you want cheaper capsules, more variety, and a closer-to-cafe espresso shot. A good Original shot has actual crema from pressure, not foam from spinning, and it works better if you sometimes want to use third-party or reusable capsules. Buy Vertuo if you want one button for both coffee and espresso and you do not want to learn anything about grinding or tamping. Vertuo is more convenient as a drip-coffee replacement. The trade-off is you are locked into Nespresso-made Vertuo pods, which cost more per ounce, and you have fewer roast options.
If you already own a drip machine or make a lot of 8 oz+ coffee for two people, Vertuo makes sense. If you drink mostly milk drinks or short shots, Original is almost always the better value.
Best Nespresso Machines by Need

Best cheap and small: Essenza Mini (Original). This is the simplest Original machine Nespresso makes. Two buttons, 25-second heat-up, 0.6L tank, no milk frother. It is loud and light enough to move if you bump it, and the drip tray is tiny. But it makes the same espresso as a $300 Original machine because the pump and capsule are identical. For black espresso or an Americano, or if you will add a separate frother, the cheaper option is fine. There is no reason to pay more for “better” espresso in the Original line unless you want built-in milk.
For a first machine on a budget, the Nespresso Essenza Mini is the one most people should start with. Pair it with a $30-40 standalone Aeroccino or a handheld frother if you want lattes occasionally, rather than buying a more expensive machine with integrated milk that you will have to clean daily.
Best for coffee + espresso in one: Vertuo Pop+ / VertuoPlus. Vertuo Pop+ is the current compact Vertuo pick. It brews five sizes (espresso to 12 oz) and has the smallest footprint of the Vertuo line. VertuoPlus has a movable water tank that helps if your counter is shallow. Both use the same centrifusion system. The Pop+ has a smaller tank (25 oz vs 60 oz on the Plus), so you will refill it constantly if you make multiple coffees. Choose Pop+ for one or two users; choose Plus for a household.
Vertuo quality is consistent, but temperature runs a bit low for some drinkers, and you cannot override the barcode volumes by much. If you like very hot coffee or want to dial in strength, you will be frustrated. If you want push-button house coffee that is better than Keurig, it delivers.
Best for lattes and cappuccinos without a separate skill: Gran Lattissima or Lattissima One (Original). These have a built-in milk carafe that siphons milk, froths it, and pours it directly. Cleanup is the issue. The carafe system must be purged after every milk drink and the milk must be refrigerated. Lattissima One is single-serve milk (no leftover milk in a carafe), which is more hygienic if you only make one milk drink a day. Gran Lattissima does multiple recipes with one fill. Both cost significantly more and have more parts to fail – the milk frothing unit clogs if not rinsed.
Best for better milk texture: Creatista Uno / Plus by Breville (Original). Instead of an auto-carafe, it has a real steam wand with auto-frothing settings. Microfoam is noticeably better than any carafe system, and you can texture oat or soy milk more reliably. It is the only Nespresso that feels like a real barista tool. It is also the most expensive, takes more counter space, and the steam wand needs wiping and purging like any espresso machine.
Quick Comparison
This is a simplified look at the most common choices. Prices move a lot with bundles, so focus on system and features rather than MSRP.
| Machine | System | Best For | Milk | Tank Size | Common Complaint |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essenza Mini | Original | Tight spaces, low cost, pure espresso | None (add separate frother) | 20 oz | Light build, small drip tray, noisy |
| Vertuo Pop+ | Vertuo | One machine for coffee and espresso | None | 25 oz | Locked to Nespresso pods, lukewarm brew |
| VertuoPlus | Vertuo | Households, larger mugs | None (optional Aeroccino bundle) | 60 oz | Large footprint, centrifusion noise |
| Gran Lattissima | Original | Hands-off lattes | Auto carafe (9 recipes) | 34 oz | Milk system cleaning, carafe seals |
| Creatista Plus | Original | Better foam, latte art curious | Auto steam wand | 51 oz | Price, more maintenance |
Running Costs and What Breaks
Capsule cost is the real expense, not the machine. Original capsules run about $0.70-$0.85 from Nespresso, $0.35-$0.55 for compatible brands. Vertuo pods run $0.95-$1.35 for coffee sizes and $0.85-$1.10 for espresso, with no cheap third-party alternative. If you drink two pods a day, Vertuo will cost $250-$400 more per year in pods alone. Factor that before you chase a bundle deal on the machine.
Failure modes are predictable. Original machines rarely fail mechanically except for scale. If you do not descale every 3 months in hard water areas, the thermoblock clogs and flow slows to a trickle. Vertuo machines have an additional failure point: the centrifusion motor and barcode reader. Error lights from a dirty reader or a dented capsule are common, and Vertuo Next in particular had early reliability issues with leaking and uneven spinning. Vertuo Pop is mechanically simpler and has been more stable.
Milk systems cause most service calls. Aeroccino frothers burn out if you froth twice without a cool-down or if milk baked onto the base is not cleaned. Carafe systems on Lattissima models clog at the milk spout if you skip the rinse cycle. If you rarely drink milk, do not buy integrated milk. A separate Nespresso milk frother is cheaper to replace than an entire built-in unit.
Capsule availability matters too. Original is sold in grocery stores, Target, and online from many roasters. Vertuo is often only at Nespresso boutiques, online, and a few big retailers. If you run out on a Sunday, Original is easier to resupply.
Who Should Buy What
Buy Essenza Mini or Pixie if: you want espresso only, have limited space, or already own a drip brewer for coffee. Also the right call for offices where people want a quick shot.
Buy Vertuo Pop+ or VertuoPlus if: you want to replace a drip machine, drink mostly 8-12 oz coffee, and like flavored or limited-edition Vertuo pods. Check bundles that include an Aeroccino if you only need occasional milk.
Buy Gran Lattissima if: someone in the house makes 1-2 lattes daily and will not tolerate extra steps or cleaning a wand. Good for a gift where convenience beats craft.
Buy Creatista if: you want a Nespresso that can actually steam decent microfoam for flat whites, and you are okay paying near-entry-espresso-machine money and wiping a wand.
If you are stuck between systems, ask one question: how often will you brew a full mug of coffee? If the answer is “daily,” get Vertuo. If the answer is “rarely,” get Original and keep a different brewer for coffee. You can find current bundles on Nespresso Vertuo machines with capsule variety packs to test whether you like the larger coffee style before committing.
Tips Before You Check Out
Do not pay extra for “19 bars” marketing. All Original machines use the same pressure. More expensive Originals add faster heat-up, quieter operation, or metal panels – not better extraction.
Check pod recycling. Nespresso offers free recycling bags for both systems, but Vertuo pods are aluminum with more coffee grounds and need to be collected. If you will not mail them back or drop at a collection point, the waste is significant. Reusable steel capsules exist for Original and work okay with a coarse grind; reusable Vertuo pods do not work reliably.
Descale with Nespresso descaling solution or a compatible citric acid kit right when the light signals. Vinegar can damage seals. And use filtered water. It prevents scale and Vertuo brews taste noticeably cleaner with low-mineral water.
FAQ
Can I use third-party capsules in a Vertuo machine?
Not reliably. Vertuo capsules have a barcode that sets brew parameters, and Nespresso has patent protection on that system. A few compatible Vertuo pods have appeared in some markets, but availability is limited and quality is inconsistent. If you want cheap or specialty third-party pods, choose an Original machine.
Is Nespresso espresso as strong as café espresso?
It is close in caffeine per shot but thinner in body. Nespresso Original makes a pressurized extraction that looks like espresso and tastes balanced, but it lacks the volume and crema depth of a fresh-ground shot from a real espresso machine. For milk drinks, most people cannot tell. For straight espresso purists, it is a compromise for speed.
How long do Nespresso machines last?
With regular descaling and filtered water, 5-8 years for Original and 4-6 years for Vertuo is common. Milk frothers and carafes usually fail sooner, often 2-3 years with daily use. The main killers are scale and milk residue, both preventable.
What is the quietest Nespresso?
Original machines with more insulation, like the Pixie and Creatista, are quieter than the bare-bones Essenza Mini. All Vertuo machines are louder during the spin cycle than any Original. If noise in the morning is a concern, an Original in another room with a separate frother is the least disruptive setup.
