The Breville Barista Express makes good espresso, but it also leaves behind coffee oils, fine grounds and mineral deposits. Regular cleaning keeps the machine’s pressure, temperature and milk-steaming performance more consistent. It also helps prevent the bitter, stale flavors that develop when old coffee residue sits in the group head or portafilter.

The important distinction is between cleaning and descaling. Cleaning removes coffee residue and milk from the brewing system. Descaling removes mineral buildup from the water circuit. You need both, but they are not interchangeable.

Quick answer: Our top pick in 2026 is the Flush the group head — our #1 rated choice. See the full ranked comparison, alternatives and buying advice below.

What you need before starting

Most routine maintenance requires only the included cleaning disc, cleaning tablet, cleaning pin, water tank and a soft cloth. If those parts are missing, a Barista Express cleaning kit is usually more useful than buying random accessories individually.

You may also want a dedicated group-head brush, a small grinder brush and a supply of espresso machine cleaning tablets. Avoid dish soap inside the machine or on parts that can retain its fragrance. A tiny amount of unscented dish soap is suitable for washing removable, non-electrical parts, but rinse everything thoroughly.

Task What it removes Typical timing Important caution
Flush the group head Loose grounds and fresh residue After each session Do not use a dry cloth to push debris into the screen
Clean portafilter and basket Oils and trapped coffee Daily or every few uses Rinse away all soap before brewing
Run the cleaning cycle Internal coffee oils When the CLEAN/DESCALE light or manual indicates Use a cleaning tablet, not descaler
Descale Mineral scale in the water circuit When prompted or as water hardness requires Follow the machine’s descale procedure exactly
Clean the steam wand Milk residue inside and outside the tip Immediately after every use Milk left to dry can block the tip

Start by knocking out the puck and rinsing the portafilter and basket with hot water. Hold the basket up to the light. The holes should be open and evenly visible. A blocked basket can produce slow, uneven extraction and may be mistaken for a grinder or tamping problem.

Run water through the group head for a few seconds with the portafilter removed. Wipe the underside of the group-head seal and the metal shower screen with a damp cloth or soft group-head brush. Be gentle around the rubber seal; an aggressive brush can shorten its life or push grounds into the edge.

Empty and rinse the drip tray before old coffee water becomes sour or sticky. Clean the water tank when it looks cloudy or develops a film, but do not put the machine base in water. If your machine uses a water filter, replace it according to the filter instructions and local water conditions. A filter reduces the mineral load; it does not eliminate the need to descale.

Clean the steam wand after every milk drink

Immediately after steaming, wipe the wand with a damp cloth and briefly open the steam valve to purge the inside. Keep the wand tip pointed safely into the drip tray or a suitable container. If milk has dried on the wand, soak only the removable steam tip in warm water and clear its holes with the supplied cleaning tool.

Never leave the wand submerged or allow water to enter the steam controls. If steam pressure falls and the tip holes are clear, the problem may be deeper in the wand or boiler system rather than something a cleaning pin can fix.

Run the Barista Express cleaning cycle

The cleaning cycle uses the rubber cleaning disc and a cleaning tablet to wash coffee oils from the brewing path. It is not the same as descaling. Check the manual for your exact control sequence, since indicator lights and button combinations can vary by version.

  1. Remove the portafilter basket and insert the rubber cleaning disc.
  2. Place one espresso machine cleaning tablet on the disc.
  3. Lock the portafilter into the group head.
  4. Empty the drip tray and place a container beneath the group head.
  5. Start the cleaning cycle as described in the manual.
  6. When it finishes, remove the portafilter and rinse it thoroughly.
  7. Run several plain-water flushes before making coffee.

Using extra tablets will not make the cycle work better. Too much detergent can leave residue, while using the wrong tablet may create excessive foaming or fail to dissolve properly. A compatible espresso machine cleaning tablet is the sensible low-cost option, provided the packaging says it is intended for espresso machine backflushing.

If the cleaning light remains on, repeat the rinse stage before assuming the electronics have failed. A tablet stuck in the portafilter or an incomplete cycle can also cause confusing symptoms.

Descale only when needed

Descaling dissolves mineral deposits caused by hard water. Scale can restrict water flow, make the pump sound different and reduce heating performance. The exact schedule depends on water hardness, filter use and how often you brew, so the machine’s warning light and manual are better guides than a fixed calendar.

Use a descaler labelled for espresso machines. Do not substitute vinegar unless Breville specifically permits it for your version. Vinegar can leave a smell, may not be the preferred formula for the machine and can complicate rinsing. A liquid espresso machine descaler is convenient because it mixes easily, while powder sachets are often cheaper per treatment but require careful measuring.

Remove the water filter if the manual instructs you to do so, mix the descaling solution as directed and run the complete descale program. Do not interrupt it halfway. Follow with the full recommended rinse cycle, then discard the first water and espresso produced afterward. If the machine still has weak flow after descaling, the restriction may be in the filter basket, shower screen, pump or internal tubing.

Clean the grinder without soaking it

Brush loose grounds from the portafilter cradle and around the grinder outlet. Empty the hopper before removing any accessible upper burr parts, and follow the manual when taking the burr carrier out. Use a dry grinder brush or a small vacuum designed for dry debris. Water and damp coffee residue can clump inside the grinder and cause inconsistent dosing.

Do not fill the hopper with rice. Hard particles can damage burrs, and rice dust may create its own blockage. Grinder-cleaning pellets can be useful when the grinder has an oily buildup, but they are optional; careful brushing and occasional burr cleaning are enough for many home users.

When to buy parts instead of more cleaner

Replace a worn group-head gasket if it leaks around the portafilter or requires excessive force to lock in place. Replace a damaged basket if holes are visibly blocked or deformed after cleaning. A steam-tip replacement is inexpensive and sensible when the holes remain blocked or the tip has been damaged.

For small parts, buy by exact Barista Express model and revision where possible. “Breville-compatible” does not always mean identical: baskets, water filters and seals can differ between machines or regions. The cheaper generic option is fine for a brush or basic cleaning cloth. For pressure-bearing seals, baskets and water filters, correct fit is more important than saving a few dollars.

FAQ

How often should I backflush a Breville Barista Express?

Run the tablet cleaning cycle when the machine’s cleaning indicator appears or when the manual recommends it. A plain-water flush after daily use is separate and can be done much more often.

Can I use vinegar to descale the Barista Express?

Use the descaler specified or approved for your machine instead. Vinegar is not the safest default because of odor, rinsing and manufacturer-compatibility concerns.

Why is my espresso still slow after cleaning?

Check the basket holes, grind size and dose first. A grind that is too fine, too much coffee or an obstructed shower screen can all restrict flow. If water flow remains weak without coffee in the portafilter, the machine may need service.

Do I need a special grinder cleaner?

No. A dry grinder brush is enough for routine maintenance. Cleaning pellets are an optional convenience, not a replacement for brushing the burrs and keeping the hopper dry.
